    Bridging the Gaps between Technology and Engineering Education

    The great technological development in which we are immersed has changed the scenarios, tools and forms of learning. In the light of those challenges, engineers must be able to develop new skills and abilities to face them, through planned technical pedagogical training that allows them to link technology with engineering education. As a result of previous research, the need for a link between technology and education in engineering was evident, as was the need for training in platforms for the creation of virtual learning spaces. To this end, the proposal was applied to a case study involving a group of engineering educators from the Escuela Politécnica Nacional de Quito. This research aims to present the results of the implementation of a training programme for engineering educators to improve their competence in new technologies and the teaching design methodologies applied to the design of online learning environments for engineering. To achieve this goal, the training included a framework based on pedagogical foundations, instructional and learning strategies, online learning technologies and good practices of engineering design activities, as well as a Learning Management System (LMS) platform adopted by the institution. The results of the implementation of this pedagogical technical training strategy show that 92% of engineering educators confirmed that the proposed framework helped them to develop online courses. In addition, 83% of engineering educators confirmed that the training course in the LMStool was useful. Additionally, it was confirmed, with an acceptance of more than 90%, that the inclusion of the recommendations for the design of the engineering activities was relevant. These results confirm the adaptability of engineering teachers to the application of new technologies and methodologies, and will enable the production of better qualified engineers to pursue this profession and face future challenges

    Arquitectura de Analítica de Big Data para Aplicaciones de Ciberseguridad

    The technological and social changes in the  cur- rent information age pose new challenges for security analysts. Novel strategies and security solutions are sought to improve security operations concerning the detection and analysis of security threats and attacks. Security analysts address security challenges by analyzing large amounts of data from server logs, communication equipment, security solutions, and blogs related to information security in different structured and unstructured formats. In this paper, we examine the application of big data to support some security activities and conceptual models to generate knowledge that can be used for the decision making or automation of security response action. Concretely, we present a massive data processing methodology and introduce  a  big data architecture devised for cybersecurity applications. This architecture identifies anomalous behavior patterns and trends to anticipate cybersecurity attacks characterized as relatively random, spontaneous, and out of the ordinary.Los cambios tecnológicos y  sociales  en  la  era de la información actual plantean nuevos desafíos para los analistas de seguridad. Se buscan nuevas estrategias y soluciones de seguridad para mejorar las operaciones de seguridad relacionadas con la detección y análisis de amenazas y ataques a la seguridad. Los analistas de seguridad abordan los desafíos de seguridad al analizar grandes cantidades de datos de registros de servidores, equipos de comunicación, soluciones de seguridad y blogs relacionados con la seguridad de la información en diferentes formatos estructurados y no estructurados. En este artículo, se examina la aplicación de big data para respaldar algunas actividades de seguridad y modelos conceptuales para generar conocimiento que se pueda utilizar  para  la  toma de decisiones o la  automatización  de  la  acción  de  respuesta de seguridad. En concreto, se presenta una metodología de procesamiento   masivo   de   datos    y   se   introduce una arquitectura  de  big   data  ideada   para   aplicaciones de ciberseguridad. Esta arquitectura identifica patrones de comportamiento anómalos y tendencias para anticipar ataques de ciberseguridad caracterizados como relativamente aleatorios, espontáneos y fuera de lo común

    Two hundred twelve patients with colonization/infection due to amoxicillin-clavulanate (AMC)-resistant Escherichia coli were studied. OXA-1- and inhibitor-resistant TEM (IRT)-producing strains were associated with urinary tract infections, while OXA-1 producers and chromosomal AmpC hyperproducers were associated with bacteremic infections.     Spanish Multicenter Study of the Epidemiology and Mechanisms of Amoxicillin-Clavulanate Resistance in Escherichia coli

    We conducted a prospective multicenter study in Spain to characterize the mechanisms of resistance to amoxicillin-clavu-lanate (AMC) in Escherichia coli. Up to 44 AMC-resistant E. coli isolates (MIC>32/16 g/ml) were collected at each of theseven participant hospitals. Resistance mechanisms were characterized by PCR and sequencing. Molecular epidemiology was studied by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and by multilocus sequence typing. Overall AMC resistance was 9.3%. The resistance mechanisms detected in the 257 AMC-resistant isolates were OXA-1 production (26.1%), hyperpro-duction of penicillinase (22.6%), production of plasmidic AmpC (19.5%), hyperproduction of chromosomic AmpC(18.3%), and production of inhibitor-resistant TEM (IRT) (17.5%). The IRTs identified were TEM-40 (33.3%), TEM-30(28.9%), TEM-33 (11.1%), TEM-32 (4.4%), TEM-34 (4.4%), TEM-35 (2.2%), TEM-54 (2.2%), TEM-76 (2.2%), TEM-79(2.2%), and the new TEM-185 (8.8%). By PFGE, a high degree of genetic diversity was observed although two well-defined clusters were detected in the OXA-1-producing isolates: the C1 cluster consisting of 19 phylogroup A/sequence type 88[ST88] isolates and the C2 cluster consisting of 19 phylogroup B2/ST131 isolates (16 of them producing CTX-M-15). Each of the clusters was detected in six different hospitals. In total, 21.8% of the isolates were serotype O25b/phylogroup B2 (O25b/B2). AMC resistance in E. coli is widespread in Spain at the hospital and community levels. A high prevalence of OXA-1 was found. Although resistant isolates were genetically diverse, clonality was linked to OXA-1-producing isolates of the STs 88 and 131. Dissemination of IRTs was frequent, and the epidemic O25b/B2/ST131 clone carried many different mechanisms of AMC resistance

Spain was one of the European countries with the highest incidence during the first wave. As a part of a consortium to monitor and study the evolution of the epidemic, we sequenced 2,170 samples, diagnosed mostly before lockdown measures. Here, we identified at least 500 introductions from multiple international sources and documented the early rise of two dominant Spanish epidemic clades (SECs), probably amplified by superspreading events. Both SECs were related closely to the initial Asian variants of SARS-CoV-2 and spread widely across Spain. We inferred a substantial reduction in the effective reproductive number of both SECs due to public-health interventions (Re < 1), also reflected in the replacement of SECs by a new variant over the summer of 2020.     Neuronal hyperactivity disturbs ATP microgradients, impairs microglial motility, and reduces phagocytic receptor expression triggering apoptosis/microglial phagocytosis uncoupling

    Phagocytosis is essential to maintain tissue homeostasis in a large number of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, but its role in the diseased brain is poorly explored. Recent findings suggest that in the adult hippocampal neurogenic niche, where the excess of newborn cells undergo apoptosis in physiological conditions, phagocytosis is efficiently executed by surveillant, ramified microglia. To test whether microglia are efficient phagocytes in the diseased brain as well, we confronted them with a series of apoptotic challenges and discovered a generalized response. When challenged with excitotoxicity in vitro (via the glutamate agonist NMDA) or inflammation in vivo (via systemic administration of bacterial lipopolysaccharides or by omega 3 fatty acid deficient diets), microglia resorted to different strategies to boost their phagocytic efficiency and compensate for the increased number of apoptotic cells, thus maintaining phagocytosis and apoptosis tightly coupled. Unexpectedly, this coupling was chronically lost in a mouse model of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) as well as in hippocampal tissue resected from individuals with MTLE, a major neurological disorder characterized by seizures, excitotoxicity, and inflammation. Importantly, the loss of phagocytosis/apoptosis coupling correlated with the expression of microglial proinflammatory, epileptogenic cytokines, suggesting its contribution to the pathophysiology of epilepsy. The phagocytic blockade resulted from reduced microglial surveillance and apoptotic cell recognition receptor expression and was not directly mediated by signaling through microglial glutamate receptors. Instead, it was related to the disruption of local ATP microgradients caused by the hyperactivity of the hippocampal network, at least in the acute phase of epilepsy. Finally, the uncoupling led to an accumulation of apoptotic newborn cells in the neurogenic niche that was due not to decreased survival but to delayed cell clearance after seizures. These results demonstrate that the efficiency of microglial phagocytosis critically affects the dynamics of apoptosis and urge to routinely assess the microglial phagocytic efficiency in neurodegenerative disorders

    Este análisis quiere sintetizar los principales beneficios al actualizar nuevos modelos de publicidad, investigar, diseñar, divulgar ejemplos para mejorar el control, de las agencias de publicidad, contribuir a crear condiciones para el óptimo desarrollo, establecer cursos de capacitación, sistemas y dispositivos que sean preventivos y no solo punitivos, descartar el infringir la ley y así evitarse graves responsabilidades. Actualizar las agencias con nuevos cursos, charlas y seminarios como la mejor alternativa para la solución de los asuntos difíciles de las instituciones; deponer intereses personales y convocar a todos los sectores para encontrar las mejores respuestas en este amplio campo de la publicidad. Es por eso que este análisis propone alternativas para lograr no cometer equivocaciones por acción u omisión de quienes tienen la obligación de que las agencias de publicidad aprovechen capacitarse y con esto conseguir capacidad, creatividad e innovación de los reglamentos para resolver problemas y encontrar las posibles soluciones..

    El Trabajo de Titulación “Revitalización de espacios abandonados en el Centro Histórico de Quito. Proyecto de vivienda para estudiantes”: es una propuesta alternativa para revitalizar un sector del Centro Histórico de Quito, respondiendo a las necesidades de los usuarios que el Municipio de Quito busca atraer con la rehabilitación de la antigua cárcel García Moreno y en conjunto con el Instituto Superior de Turismo y Patrimonio. En el capítulo primero se realiza una descripción de los aspectos de estudio sobre el territorio del Distrito Metropolitano de Quito, el crecimiento y expansión territorial de la mancha urbana, y el crecimiento y distribución de la población, la determinación del lugar de intervención, se explica cómo el crecimiento y expansión del territorio llevó a la elección del área de intervención, la problemática que se desarrolla en el Centro Histórico y sus consecuencias respecto a su cambio de uso de residencial y turístico a ciudad museo. En el capítulo segundo se analizan los referentes que fueron tomados en cuenta para la elaboración del proyecto, estudiando así su aporte social, cultural, constructivo, tecnológico, y funcional. Se estudiaron dos referentes, uno urbano para un aporte a nivel macro de proyecto y uno de un proyecto arquitectónico pequeño para un aporte a nivel micro. En el capítulo tercero fueron analizadas todas las condiciones del proyecto, el contexto en el que se intervino, sus condiciones topográficas, climáticas, paisajistas, el usuario, el entorno inmediato, regulaciones y condiciones, para así poder plantear una alternativa que responda a todas las necesidades encontradas. En el capítulo cuarto se explica el planteamiento del proyecto, todos los análisis formales que llevaron a los criterios de diseño, el impacto y la importancia del proyecto. Se analiza médiate planos, cada espacio, su función, forma, estructura y actividad, comprobando así el objetivo inicialmente planteado
